January 2018 - Week 1

When I joined “A Simple Year” this month, I have learned about Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus from “The Minimalists”.

These two guys say “Minimalists don’t focus on having less, less, less; rather, we focus on making room for more: more time, more passion, more experiences, more growth, more contribution, more contentment. More freedom. Clearing the clutter from life’s path helps us make that room.”

They suggested trying a “30 Days Minimalism game” with next rules - find a friend or family member: someone who’s willing to get rid of their excess stuff. This month, each of you must get rid of one thing on the first day. On the second, two things. Three items on the third. So forth, and so on. Anything can go! Clothes, furniture, electronics, tools, decorations, etc. Donate, sell, or trash. Whatever you do, each material possession must be out of your house—and out of your life—by midnight each day.

To be honest, I have not find a partner to join me in this game, I even felt weird asking anyone directly.

This only person I asked to join me was my husband, who was not eager to join but was curious how the outcome will look like.

Ok, I thought, I will do it myself; in the end, it can’t be that hard!

It is 7th January and I have completed week one. So far so good. I feel that now I am so focused on finding stuff that I want to get rid of, that I tend to go around the house looking at each item and asking myself “Do I really need this? Do I really like it?”.

And feeling a bit guilty when I came across a wedding gift from 8 years ago, that I have not used at all (or maybe once), but I still carry it around with me across countries!

This is the outcome of the week one (things are donated, given to friends/family or sold): 28 items.

The first thing I was eager to try is to minimize material belongings and give more space for thinking, enjoying and doing things I like doing.
